Construction Milestone Reached for New Power Plant
in Key West
ORLANDO,
Fla., March 9, 2006 – A 133-metric
ton combustion turbine generator, the largest component of
a new high-efficiency power plant in Key West, Fla., was
delivered and was successfully placed onto the plant’s
foundation March 5.
“This delivery is a major milestone for this new power
resource, which will provide reliable, efficient power to
Key West and the Lower Keys, as well as FMPA’s other
member communities,” said FMPA General Manager and
CEO Roger Fontes.
The
combustion turbine generator and other equipment were shipped
by barge from Houston, Texas, to Keys Energy Services’ Stock
Island Generating Facility, where the new unit will be located.
Upon arrival, the turbine and generator components were moved
off the barge and lifted by a crane onto the plant’s
foundation.
Construction began in November 2005, and the plant is scheduled
begin operating early this summer.
Stock Island Unit 4 is a 42 Megawatt low sulfur oil-fueled
combustion turbine generator to be located at the Stock Island
Generating Facility in Key West, Fla. The new power plant
will be owned by FMPA and operated by Keys Energy Services
(KEYS), the municipal electric utility serving Key West and
the lower Florida Keys.
