FMPA General Manager and CEO Receives National Public
Power Award
WASHINGTON, D.C., June 24, 2008 — Roger
Fontes, general manager and CEO of Florida Municipal Power
Agency (FMPA), received the American Public Power Association’s
(APPA) Harold Kramer-John Preston Personal Service Award at
the Association’s national conference in New Orleans,
La. This award recognizes service to APPA through substantial
contributions toward association goals.
Fontes has 37 years of experience in the utility
industry. Prior to joining FMPA in March 2001, he was the
Assistant General Manager at the Northern California Power
Agency. Fontes serves on the Board of Directors of APPA, and
he is a past chair of APPA’s Legislative and Resolutions
Committee.
Fontes is co-founder and Executive Committee
member of the Transmission Access Policy Study (TAPS) Group.
TAPS is a national association of transmission-dependent electric
utilities that supports non-discriminatory transmission access
as well as vigorous, competitive wholesale electric markets.
FMPA is a charter member of TAPS.
Fontes was elected as the first President
of the Board of Directors of Public Gas Partners. This first-of-its-kind
non-profit corporation is in business to purchase producing
natural gas production facilities throughout the U.S. to lower
costs for consumers. Fontes is a member of the Florida Municipal
Power Pool’s Executive Committee and the Florida Reliability
Coordinating Council’s Board of Directors.
Fontes holds a bachelor’s degree in
mechanical engineering from California State University, Los
Angeles, and a master’s degree in environmental engineering
from the University of Southern California.
History
of the Award
In 1959, APPA initiated this award in honor of Harold Kramer,
of Loup River Public Power District, Columbus, Neb., who played
a leading role in the formation of APPA and served as its
first executive secretary and general manager from 1941 to
mid-1942. In 1969, the APPA Board of Directors changed this
award to also honor John Preston, of Loup River Public Power
District, first vice president of APPA. This award recognizes
service to APPA.
