FMPA CEO Fontes Announces Retirement
ORLANDO,
Fla., Aug. 4, 2008 – Roger A. Fontes announced today
that he will retire Sept. 5 as General Manager and CEO of
the Florida Municipal Power Agency (FMPA) after seven years
leading the Orlando-based wholesale power supplier.
“I
will always look back on my time at FMPA with pride and admiration
for what we’ve accomplished together,” said Fontes.
“The time is right for me to retire for a couple reasons.
First, we’ve completed the Treasure Coast Energy Center
and begun development of a new unit at Cane Island, both major
short-term goals. Secondly, this step will allow me to spend
more time with my family and new grandson.”
A
special meeting of FMPA’s Board of Directors has been
called for Tuesday, Aug. 5 at noon to address how FMPA will
proceed with naming an interim CEO.
“FMPA
is well-positioned for the future,” said Fontes. “Next
week, we will celebrate the commercial operation of Treasure
Coast Energy Center, our first wholly owned generating unit
at a brand new power plant site. And our Executive Committee
last month approved FMPA’s Integrated Resource Plan,
which is the blueprint for our power supply future.”
“It
has been a privilege and a pleasure to work with Roger,”
said James C. Welsh, Chairman of FMPA and President and General
Manager of Kissimmee Utility Authority. “He has contributed
enormously to this organization. Under Roger’s leadership,
FMPA has transitioned from a non-operating owner of power
plants to a developer and operator of our own generating units.”
Prior
to joining FMPA, Fontes was the Assistant General Manager
at the Northern California Power Agency, where he spent 20
years in executive and management positions. He was also employed
five years at the California Energy Commission and five years
with the city of Los Angeles and its Department of Water and
Power.
Fontes
serves in leadership roles for a number of organizations and
associations, including the American Public Power Association
(APPA), Public Gas Partners, Transmission Access Policy Group,
Florida Municipal Power Pool and the Florida Reliability Coordinating
Council.
APPA
presented Fontes with the Harold Kramer-John Preston Personal
Service Award at the Association’s national conference
in June 2008. This award recognizes service to APPA through
substantial contributions toward association goals.
