Happy Earth Day from Your Friends at Cane Island Power Park

Today is Earth Day, a time to reflect on how we can all be good stewards of our planet’s precious natural resources. That includes reflecting on how we can responsibly generate and use electricity.

From the very beginning, Cane Island Power Park was designed to operate in harmony with the environment. The new generator being constructed at the site, Cane Island Unit 4, features a highly efficient design and state-of-the-art environmental controls that will make it one of the cleanest and most efficient generators in the state. The generator was also designed to use treated wastewater, conserving Florida’s precious water resources. Additionally, the site preserves a natural woodland buffer around the plant, minimizing sound and visual impacts and preserving natural green space.

Perhaps even more importantly, modernizing the statewide fleet of power plants with clean, efficient units, like Cane Island Unit 4, is a key part of our plans to achieve the state’s goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and addressing the threat of global climate change. We are pleased to report that the members of the Florida Municipal Power Agency are poised to reduce their 2017 emissions to year 2000 levels, an ambitious first step towards slowing climate change.

As consumers, we also have a responsibility to use electricity wisely in our homes and businesses. FMPA’s member utilities, including Kissimmee Utility Authority (KUA), have launched a $1 million annual conservation fund to support energy conservation education in their communities. Take a moment to visit KUA’s Web site this Earth Day and learn what all of us can do to conserve electricity.
