Cane Island Expansion Reaches Construction Milestone
The Cane Island construction project achieved a major milestone in December with the delivery of two major components of the power plant. The 85.5-ton combustion turbine and the associated 271.5-ton generator were successfully delivered Dec. 2 and Dec. 4 to the Cane Island Power Park.
The combustion turbine was shipped by rail from Norfolk, Va. Check out photos of the delivery process below. The construction process continues to proceed toward commercial operation in 2011.
The Story in Photos
The turbine is loaded onto a trailer after traveling by rail from Norfolk, Va., to a location in Poinciana, Fla., about four miles from the site.

The turbine makes its way up Tallahassee Avenue in Intercession City, Fla.

The turbine enters the plant site.

Safely delivered to the plant site, the generator awaits installation.

Brightening the Holidays for Our Neighbors in Need

The organizations partnering to build Cane Island Unit 4 donated $3,000 to a local food bank on Dec. 11 to brighten the holidays for the hungry. The donation will support the Central Florida Community Breadbasket’s mission of assisting more than 1,200 needy families per day in Osceola, Orange and Polk counties.
The co-owners of the Cane Island Power Park, FMPA and KUA, as well as the construction contractor for the project, Zachry Industrial Incorporated, have made giving back to the community an important part of this construction project. Some recent examples include:
- Members of the construction team participated in the Susan G. Komen Foundation Race for the Cure in October.
- They also conducted a school supply drive, donating nearly 5,000 items to Reedy Creek Elementary.
- The project arranged for NASCAR truck driver David Starr to give a motivational speech to teens at the Adolescent Residential Campus in Intercession City and donated more than $500 worth of cleaning supplies to the facility.
- Three teams from the project participated in the Sunshine Foundation Softball Tournament, donating more than $600.
- The project recently joined the Adopt-a-Highway program, and volunteers completed their first highway clean-up Dec. 5.
- Employees of the project conducted a holiday food drive and donated more than 2,000 items to the Community Breadbasket.
- FMPA, KUA and Zachry and their employees also participate in a variety of charitable giving projects in their own communities throughout the year.
Neighbors helping neighbors is a value everyone at Cane Island Power Park believes in. We hope these efforts will help make this holiday a brighter one for our neighbors in need.
